What Is Gamma Knife®

About Gamma Knife®

lars

Gamma Knife is an advanced radiation treatment for adults and children with small to medium brain tumors, abnormal blood vessel formations called arteriovenous malformations, epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia, a nerve condition that causes chronic pain, and other neurological conditions’ (UCSF, 2015)

The Gamma Knife originated from Swedish neurosurgeon, Professor Lars Leksell and Physicist Borje Larsson. It is a form of surgery using radiation instead of the use of a blade. The radiation precisely destroys selected areas of tissue using ionizing radiation, which is a type of radiation that carries enough energy to free the electrons from synthetic radioactive isotope of Cobalt-60. This radiation is then used to destroy abnormal tissues while preserving the surrounding healthy tissues. With specialized equipment, 192 narrow radiation beams (Perfexion™) are focused on the tumor or other intended targets. Each beam only carries small amount of radiations that will have no or miniscule impact on the normal brain tissues, however, a stronger dose of radiations which consists of 192 beams are concentrated ontoone point, the tumor. Gamma knife radiosurgery excels in precision which in some cases has a lower risk of side effects occurring compared with other types of radiation therapy.

Since the first introduction of Gamma Knife 40 years ago, over eighty hundred thousand of patients worldwide have been treated with this technology, improving their quality of life. Gamma Knife Radiosurgery main advantages are: Single day treatment, no hospital stay, preservation of Neuro Cognitive Functions, multiple tumor treatments, etc. Gamma Knife radiosurgery is often the primary option for clinical condition such as Acoustic Neuroma, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer in developed countries.

Gamma Knife® Perfexion™

Gamma Knife Perfexion or the so called Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion is the second generation technology that comes from Sweden. This technology is preferred around the world for its extreme accuracy, efficiency and outstanding therapeutic response. With this technology, we are able to perform cranial radiosurgery with such accuracy in short period of times. Perfexion is fully integrated to ensure the safety and comfort of the patient and staff.

Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion

Advantages:
– Best in-class radiation protection for patients and staff
– Unrivaled accuracy (mean average of 0.15mm)
– Superior dose conformity (dose where you want)

Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion in comparison with its predecessors (Neurosurgery, 2008)

Compared to older models, Perfexion are equipped with the automated collimator arrangement which makes it possible to produce more complex treatment volumes than with previous models. This results from the enhanced ability to shape isodose volumes, even for single isocenters. The collimator arrangement and the patient positioning system also allow shorter patient transit times, reducing unwanted radiation exposure during movement between isocenters.

The Perfexion exceeds the capabilities of previous gamma knife models in terms of treatment, efficiency, and conformity and radiation protection. These qualities enable treatment of larger target volumes, especially close to eloquent areas. Pathologies previously inaccessible in the head and neck are now treatable due to the increased volume of the radiation cavity.

With this technology we are able to perform faster and more precise in comparison to our major competitor worldwide.
