Vascular Malformation

Vascular malformation treatment depends on the type of abnormality. Some require surgery, while others are better using Gamma Knife treatment. When considering treatment for any vascular malformation in the brain.

Types of Vascular Malformation

Different types of Vascular Malformations include:
– Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM) – abnormal knots of blood vessels in the brain
– Capillary telangiectasia – dilated blood vessels
– Cavernous malformations – abnormally formed, cluster-like blood vessels in the brain or spinal cord
– Dural arteriovenous fistulas – irregular links between the arteries and the brain or spinal cord covering
– Spinal arteriovenous – abnormal twist of blood vessels on or near the spinal cord
– Venous malformations – enlarged veins in the brain or spinal cord

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Symptoms are dependent on exactly where the problem is. Pain, bleeding in the brain, headaches and seizures are the most common symptoms.

Imaging tests such as MRI and CT scans can detect many vascular malformations. However the gold standard to diagnose and understand AVM is catheter cerebral angiogram. Cavernous malformations are best seen with MRI, as catheter cerebral angiogram is not visible for cavernous malformations.
