Pituitary Tumor

Treating pituitary tumor comes to the physician, taking accounts to the age, health, size, how far it’s grown into the brain and type of tumor. Since the establishment in 1968, patients have been choosing the noninvasive and effective Gamma Knife treatment. However other options include:
– Waiting (For people who don’t have symptoms and are older or poor in health)
– Surgery, performed either through the scalp or through the nose and sinuses
– Drug therapy to shrink, destroy or block the tumor from overproducing hormones

Synthetic hormones may be needed following surgical removal of the tumor.

Development

Most of pituitary tumors are noncancerous and will never cause symptoms or be diagnosed. Some people may have tumors that produce more than the normal amount of hormones, which triggers endocrine symptoms. The lesions are called “secreting”. Some pituitary tumors grow large enough to compress the visual apparatus and are often discovered due to visual complaints. Pituitary tumors are more susceptible to older adults and people who have family history of certain genetic condition (multiple endocrine neoplasia type I (MEN I), but the tumors can occur at any age to anyone.
