Pineal tumor treatments usually include surgery and radiation, like Gamma Knife radiosurgery. Gamma Knife treatment can provide excellent pineal tumor control. Chemoteraphy can be used in complement to Gamma Knife. For cases of pineoblastoma, radiation may be given to the brain and spine to stop spreading of cancer through cerebral spinal fluid. Devices such as shunts may be needed to relieve fluid on the brain (hydrocephalus).

Pineal Tumor Development

Pineal tumors form close to the pineal gland (gland that regulates melatonin – the hormone responsible for wake and sleep cycles that lies deep within the brain). Pineal tumors can form in the tissue around the pineal gland or in the cells that composes pineal gland. Pineal tumors are either slow growing or aggressive which is more likely to spread around. Children and young adults are more susceptible to develop pineal tumors.
