Craniopharyngiomas

Craniopharyngiomas are benign (noncancerous) brain tumors that in most cases aren’t detected until they have grown large enough to put pressure on the surrounding areas. Even though the tumors are docile, they can still cause significant symptoms. Craniopharyngiomas surgery will occasionally be used to remove some tumors. For the tumors that cannot be removed by surgery alone, other treatment like Gamma Knife radiosurgery, radiation therapy or combination of both can be applied. At Gamma Knife Center Indonesia, our team and top doctors will ensure you are receiving the treatment that is best for you.

Craniopharyngioma Development

Craniopharyngioma forms early in life, during the embryotic stages of development. The tumors are located around the undersurface of the brain near the pituitary gland (pea sized organ that controls other glands and hormones). The tumor grows slowly and is a rare condition which mostly affects children between ages of 5 and 10; some others do develop the same condition later in adulthood or after the age of 50.

Symptoms

Craniopharyngioma causes symptoms by:
– Increasing pressure on the brain that sometimes comes from the buildup of fluid inside the skull that leads to brain swelling
– Disrupting hormone production by the pituitary gland
– Decreasing vision due to pressure or damage to the optic nerve

The increased pressure inside the brain will cause headache, nausea, vomiting-morning sickness, and difficulty with balance. Also damage to the pituitary gland will cause hormone imbalances that could lead to excessive thirst, frequent urination and stunted growth.

When the optic nerve is damaged by the tumor, vision problems will occur and the damage is permanent (may get worse after surgery to remove the tumor). Change in behavioral and learning process may be present. Most of the patients having the disease will most likely have some vision problems and decreased hormone production.

Examination and tests diagnosis

Examinations and tests that may be done:
– Blood tests (to measure hormone levels)
– CT scan or MRI scans of the brain
– Neurological examination
